The Stribblehill Family - Chipping Campden 

Generation 1

John Stribblehill (Great x 7 Grandfather of Dawn Tilt nee Gardner)

Born in London 1690 John married  Mary Waple on 31st March 1700 at All Hallows, Tottenham, Haringey.  Can only find records of two sons, Tomas 1708-1792 and Gravely 1710-?. John died in 1722 and was buried in Thame, Oxfordshire on 24th May 1722.

Generation 2

Gravely Stribblehill (Great x 6 Grandfather), born in St Martin's in the Field, London on 26th May 1710 and was  baptised there on 30.05.1710.  I haven't managed to find a marriage recorded for Gravely but in 1748 he was living in Chipping Campden and had a son Gravely. 

Generation 3

Gravely Stribblehill (Great x 5 Grandfather) was born in Chipping Campden in 1748 and died there in 1842.  He  married Elizabeth Smith at St James' Church, Chipping Campden on 11th June 1767 and had a son Thomas 1773-1834.  After Elizabeth's death he married Elizabeth Merrick on 29th October 1784; they went on to have two daughters,  Esther (1785) and Elizabeth (1785). It is believed in died in 1842.

Generation 4

Thomas Stribblehill (Great x 4 Grandfather) was born in Chipping Campden in 1773 and died/was buried there on 25.05.1834.  He was baptised in Chipping Campden on 24th August 1773. 

He married Alice/Elizabeth Watton on 10th November 1794 at St James' Church, Chipping Campden.

Thomas and Alice / Elizabeth appear to have had four sons - 

  • William 1795-1858.William married Susannah and had a son Willian (1834). He was a shoe maker and Cordwainer
  • Gravely 1796-1866. Married Elizabeth Sermon on 29.08.1823 and had four children, Mary 1830, Joseph 1834-1901, Emma 1835 and Gravely 1837-1842

  • George 1813-1875. George was baptised aged 7 on 05.05.1820 and married Sarah Haines in Hempsted, Gloucestershire on 9.07.1832.  He had 7 children - Selina 1833-1901, Francis 1836-?, Aldolphus 1838-1848, Kezia 1842-1922, George 1850-?, Albert 1860-?. He worked as a shoemaker and a wood sawyer

Generation 5

John Stribblehill (Great x 3 Grandfather) was born in Chipping Campden in 1809 and died/was buried there on 21.04.1884.  John married Ann Merriman (see Merriman Family) on 29.11.1830 at St James' Church, Chipping Campden and they had six daughters who were all born in Chipping Campden -

  1. Ann born 17.09.1831, Baptised 24.12.1831 and died aged 13 on 10.01.1844
  2. Lavinia -- see Generation 6
  3. Selina born in 1837 and was baptised on 15.10.1837.  She married Daniel Taylor a Stone Mason who was born in Chipping Camden in 1836.  They had three children, Ann b1861, William b1863 and Selina born and died 1866
  4. Louise born 1840 - 1843
  5. Lydia born 1842 and married Thomas Preston (b1842) an agricultural labourer in September 1871 in Oakham, Rutland.  There is no record of Lydia in the 1871 census and no information on why she moved to Rutland. Lydia and Thomas had four children all born in Cottesmore, Rutland, Henry b1873, Egbert b1875, Annie b1877 and Lydia b 1879.  Census records show
    1881 Family are living in Cottesmore and Thomas is now the postmaster and Lydia is working as a dressmaker
    1891 Lydia is now a widow and is he postmistress.  Her son Henry is a postman and Egbert is the Telegraph Messenger. Also living with her is her neice, Emily Keen who is working as a cook.
    1901 Lydia continues to be the postmistress and her daughter Lydia is her assistant. Her neice Ellizabeth Ann is living with her and is working as
    a cook
  6. Ann born 1846 and married to Joseph Keen (1842) who was a carpenter.  Ann and Joseph had eight children - Emily b1869, John b1872, Charles b1874, Frank b1876, Elizabeth b1880, Frances b1882, Fred b1884 and Thomas b1888.
    1901 Census Ann and Joseph as both alive and Joseph is still working as a carpenter, no children are living at home
John worked as an agricultural labourer and a Sawyer.  At the time of his death on 21st April 1884 he was living at Workhouse Bank, Broad Campden,

 Generation 6

Lavinia Stribblehill (Great x 2 Grandmother) was born in Chipping Campden in 1835/1836 and baptised on 18 January 1836.  In 1851 she was living at home and working as a Gloveress. On 8th September 1859 she married  Charles Cooper (see Cooper page). Charles was a stonemason and he and Lavinia lived at the Back End, of Wyatt's Yard, Chipping Campden.  Lavinia and Charles had two daughters Lydia - see generation 7 and Ann born 1846

In the 1891 census Charles is working away from home and Lavinia is listed with Lydia and a Grand Daughter, Ether, who we presume is Ann's daughter.

Charles died on 27th December 1896 and Lavinia the following day - See separate page.  They are buried at Chipping Campden.

 Generation 7

Lydia Stribblehill Cooper was born in Chipping Campden in 1868 and trained as a dressmaker.  Lydia had a daughter Edith, prior to marrying William Gardner in 1899. They went on to have two sons

  2. Norman Parsonage 1904
